Designs that support democracy
Sandy Pentland, Professor Stanford HAI and MIT
Abstract: Interface design has dramatic effects on community rationality and consensus. I will describe two interfaces that have been proven to strongly reduce misinformation and polarization, and two that appear to do a good job at improving inclusiveness and finding consensus. In each case careful use of AI can significantly improve performance.
Bio: Sandy Pentland is co-creator of MIT media lab, and faculty at Stanford HAI. His most recent book is The Digitalist Papers, a collection of essays by leading thinkers on how digital tech and democracy can best get along.
