Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands at the forefront of technological innovation, catalyzing advancements across various engineering disciplines. Electrical engineers harness AI’s potential to create intelligent power systems, optimize energy use, and integrate renewable energy sources. Software engineers utilize AI to automate tasks such as code generation, testing, debugging, while also creating intelligent chatbots and recommendation systems. In mechanical engineering, AI enhances the design processes, lightens structures, and augments aerodynamics. Civil engineers apply AI to foster sustainable infrastructure design, urban planning, and real-time health monitoring of structures.
Meanwhile, chemical engineers capitalize on AI for process optimization, molecular design, and the development of eco-friendly chemical reactions. In the automotive sector, AI drives advancements in autonomous vehicles, design enhancement, and efficient manufacturing. Finally, materials and manufacturing engineers employ AI to discover innovative materials, fine-tune manufacturing procedures, and maintain stringent quality control.
The multifaceted applications of AI underscore its transformative influence in engineering, stimulating innovation, and expanding the horizon of possibilities. General Profile & Requirements:
- Safety Engineering role supporting Applied Materials’ RD&E and facilities infrastructure projects based in Santa Clara, CA.
- Position will report to the Manager of EHS responsible for managing EHS in in Santa Clara. Position will work closely with site management in RD&E and Facilities and other EHS staff to drive Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) programs, ensure regulatory compliance and promote continuous improvement.
- Ensure EHS programs and management systems in place in alignment with Corporate EHS requirements to minimize the risks to employees, the environment and the community. Some of the Key EHS programs for the site include:
Chemical Authorization Program Job Hazard Analysis/Risk Assessment Program Management of Change (MoC) and Process Emission and Abatement Assessment Program EHS Facilities Project Review and Sign-off Program Lock Out/ Tagout (LOTO) Respiratory Protection Program Radiation Safety Program Fire Prevention and Protection Program
- Ensures compliance with required EHS codes, standards and regulations. Act as a liaison with local, regional or national regulatory authorities.
- Capability to conduct sampling (water, soil, chemical as needed) and analyze the results to provide guidance to management to ensure safety and EHS compliance.
- EHS Training capabilities & experience conducting training for employees and management.
- Ensures proper investigations of EHS incidents conducted and drive corrective actions to closure
- Review and report EHS progress and performance for assigned site/function based on established EHS metrics to site management.
- Develop EHS strategies to develop action plans for continually improving performance and customer satisfaction.
- Ensures that specific projects assigned are completed as planned to meet EHS goals. Provides management with updates and escalation on projects/programs. Maintain communication channel with site/location functions.
- Track and trend EHS related legislation and take appropriate action to comply with requirements. Communicates EHS issues to all necessary management and employees.
- Remains knowledgeable of progress made in EHS best practices and incorporate these within Applied.
- Interfaces with internal stakeholders regarding EHS issues with ability to work with cross functional teams to accomplish goals and objectives
- Provide technical guidance on EHS issues to the site engineering, manufacturing and support organizations and contribute to the development of site-wide EHS standards and procedures.
- Manage consultants/contractors used to support the EHS programs including development of scopes of work, project management and budget management. Ensures that all work is assigned appropriately and that results are obtained and evaluated.
- Readiness for occasional travelling from time to time.
Education and Experience
- University degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Health and Safety or equivalent
- Cerifitied Safety Professional (CSP) preferred
- At least 3 years professional experience in a comparable role
- Experience with general EHS auditing to identify opportunities for improvement and provide suitable recommendations for corrective actions
- Experience with EHS management systems (ISO 14001, OHSAS18001/ISO 45001)
- Work experience in Industrial Hygiene highly desired
- Semiconductor chemistry and safety highly desired
- Computer use and applications skills required, including MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat.

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on a number of factors including location and level and will vary depending on confirmed job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. We are looking for a strong Senior Mechanical Engineer – Power Systems to work on new power electronics product development. You will design new solutions to support the generation of green hydrogen and execute from prototype to production.
You will be based in San Jose, CA, and will report to our Mechanical Engineering Manager, Power Electronics.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Work on design and analysis of mechanical aspects of a high power electronic product for hydrogen electrolysis. This includes:
- Lead the mechanical site layout of power systems ranging from prototype- scale to full-scale plants
- Lead detailed mechanical design of power bussing and bus interfaces for DC output
- Direct Electric Hydrogen’s power systems equipment suppliers and manage supplier relationships’ technical and commercial aspects, with support from supply chain team.
- Lead the power system’s high-level design and architecture together with power systems electrical engineers.
- Collaborate with systems optimization and modeling team to study power system and plant cost tradeoffs and architecture decisions.
- Build electromechanical interface drawings, system diagrams, design reviews, and other internal and external documentation related to this scope of work
- Be a systems thinker and work across departments, teams, domestic/international offices, and levels of seniority to define interfaces, requirements, and specifications.
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of sheet metal, extrusion and welding
- Mechanical design, Tolerance analysis, structures
- Familiar with Structural design and FEA software to solve stress and deflection condition
- Familiar with NEC, NFPA and ASHRAE
- Proficient in 3D modeling and CAD drawings -Familiar with outdoor rated electronics packaging, corrosion
- Supplier management
- Spec’ing equipment
- Familiarity with dry-type and liquid-filled transformers, medium voltage breakers, fuses, and switches
- Kiloamp-level AC and DC bussing systems; bus bars and underground conduit conductors cost modeling
- Masters in Mechanical Engineering plus 5yrs relevant, or BS plus 8yrs relevant experience
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS - Experience in low and medium volume production
- Identifies issues and creates solutions
- Working knowledge of scripting (MATLAB, Python) or other data analysis tools
- Basic knowledge of electric fundamentals
- Startup experience preferred

Actual base salary offered to the hired applicant will be determined based on their work location, level, qualifications, job-related skills, as well as relevant education or training and experience.
