Many professionals, including Engineers, have an interest in “going it alone,” or stepping away from the corporate world to pursue entrepreneurial aspirations. Perhaps you have considered this opportunity. Being the owner of a business is a task that offers the possibility of fulfillment on several levels: financial, business, and personal. Sadly, 20% of new businesses fail in their first year and 50% fail within 5 years. These statistics are daunting and discouraging to budding entrepreneurs.
SCORE is a nonprofit organization which was created in 1964 through the Small Business Administration (SBA) to help both startup and existing businesses to overcome these discouraging statistics. The presentation will discuss the SCORE strategy, tactics, and tools that are utilized to help new businesses launch successfully, and to help existing businesses to thrive and reach their goals.
Bill Oakes had a two-part career. He was in Corporate High Tech for 17 years, and in the Self-Employed World for over 33 years. He was first employed by several High Tech companies in minicomputers, data communications, systems programming, and project management in various roles from Software Engineer to Director. His Self-Employed years have had several pivots that included buying a franchise, providing small business bookkeeping and tax services, subcontracting to a national education company as a seminar speaker, and providing fee-only financial planning services.
Bill has been a mentor at SCORE since 2018, and he enjoys working with aspiring and current small business owners. His focus at SCORE is with small businesses on their startup and growth plans in the areas of business planning, financial projections, tax implications, and funding.
