SUMMARY:Mastering Product Variations by Creating a Universal Language for Software Customization Across Industries
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis: In the world of software and product development\, making artifacts customizable for different needs is crucial. The research community has made great strides with the Universal Variability Language (UVL)\, a tool that helps define and manage these customizations. However\, while UVL is helpful\, it doesn't cover everything.\nThis talk introduces a new concept called the Generic REAlization Language (GREAL). GREAL aims to fill the gaps that UVL left behind\, especially when it comes to applying customizations to the core parts of a product line.\nKey features of GREAL include:\nOpenness: Easily adaptable to different industries and uses.\nFlexibility: Can handle various types of customizations.\nDeclarativity: Simple and clear rules for customization.\nReusability: Can be applied to multiple projects without starting from scratch.\nThe speaker will show how GREAL works with different base languages like UML\, Java\, and documentation. The speaker will also discuss a successful large-scale deployment of GREAL for Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) at Airbus.\nJoin us to explore how this new tool can make software and product customization more efficient and versatile.\nSpeaker(s): Dr. Vishnu S. Pendyala\, Prof. Jézéquel\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/468361

SUMMARY:Analog Superpowers: How 20th Century Technology Theft Built the National Security State
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid in-person and online event. Pre-registration is required for either.\nThis talk is co-hosted by the (https://siliconvalleyhistory.com/)\nIn this talk\, which draws on her new book (https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/A/bo222008444.html)\, Katherine C. Epstein will explore a little-known but important chapter in the history of analog computing\, and its surprising connections with today’s world of digital devices and great-power competition.\nIn the decade before World War I\, two British civilians named Arthur Pollen and Harold Isherwood invented an artificially intelligent analog computer for aiming the big guns of battleships. Rather than pay for their invention\, however\, first the British navy and then the US navy pirated it. When the inventors sued for patent infringement\, both governments invoked legal privileges to withhold evidence on the grounds of national-security secrecy. The US lawsuits became entangled with high-level Anglo-American diplomacy during World War II and with the Manhattan Project. The talk will thus speak to several major—and timely—issues: the intersection of computer technology and geopolitical rivalry\, the impact of patent laws on defense innovation\, and the scope of government secrecy.\nCo-sponsored by: IEEE Silicon Valley Tech History Committee (SVTHC)\nSpeaker(s): Katherine Epstein\,\n673 South Milpitas Blvd.\, Milpitas\, California\, United States\, 95035\, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/461664

SUMMARY:Advancing Speech Processing with End-to-End Modeling and LLM Integration
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe field of speech processing is currently dominated by end-to-end (E2E) models\, which utilize a single model to optimize directly towards the final objective function rather than optimizing multiple sub-models separately. This trend is particularly notable in automatic speech recognition (ASR). In this talk\, we will provide an overview of E2E ASR models and discuss recent advancements from an industry perspective. Subsequently\, we will examine the trend of E2E modeling beyond ASR\, with applications such as multi-speaker ASR and simultaneous speech translation\, where ASR traditionally serves as only one of several components. This trend ultimately unlocks multimodal intelligence by integrating speech capabilities into large language models (LLM). We will highlight the most recent developments in this area\, which present unprecedented opportunities for the field.\nSpeaker(s): Jinyu Li\,\nAgenda:\n6:30 – 7:00 Check-in\, networking\, food\, and drink\n7:00 – 8:30 PM – Presentation by Dr. Jinyu Li\n8:30 – 9:00 PM – Q & A\nRoom: 1302\, Bldg: Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation Building \, Santa Clara University\, 500 El Camino Real\, Santa Clara\, California\, United States\, 95053

SUMMARY:Thermal Analysis for Thermal Challenges with Heterogeneous Packaging
DESCRIPTION:Thermal Analysis for Thermal Challenges with Heterogeneous Packaging\nAbstract:\nWith the commercialization of thermoreflectance thermal imaging Microsanj has met many of the thermal challenges inherent with today’s advanced devices.\nThe thermoreflectance principle exploits the fact that the reflectivity of a material changes with temperature. By measuring the reflectivity change with probing wavelengths in the visible band\, this technique supports thermal measurements with diffraction limited spatial resolution in the sub-micron range and a temporal response in the nanosecond range.\nNew thermal analysis challenges are arising with current trends and advances in heterogeneous packaging techniques. To address these new challenges\, Microsanj is developing enhancements and new products. A brief description of these techniques including optical pump-probe imaging\, flash thermography\, over-the-air imaging for the analysis of embedded antennas\, and others approaches being investigated will be provided in this presentation.\nBio:\nDustin Kendig\nDustin Kendig is Co-Founder and Vice President of Microsanj LLC in Santa Clara\, California.\nAt Microsanj he is developing sub-micrometer transient thermal imaging systems for the semiconductor industry for thermal characterization and fault isolation. Microsanj has 75+ commercial products and research partnerships with companies and research labs in a dozen countries.\nHe is a member of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement and Reliability Societies. In 2009\, he was the recipient of the Huffman Prize\, Dean’s Award\, and Chancellor’s Award. He won best poster at IEEE PVSC in 2010 and best paper at IEEE ITherm in 2017. He holds 4 patents and has published over 60 papers.\nDustin Kendig received his B.S. SUMMARY:From Video to Virtual: Object-centric 3D scene understanding from videos
DESCRIPTION:The growing demand for immersive\, interactive experiences has underscored the importance of 3D data in understanding our surroundings. Traditional methods for capturing 3D data are often complex and equipment-intensive. In contrast\, my research aims to utilize unconstrained videos\, such as those from augmented reality glasses\, to effortlessly capture scenes and objects in their full 3D complexity. As a first step\, I will describe a method to incorporate Epipolar Geometry priors in multi-view Transformer models to enable identifying objects across extreme pose variations. Next\, I will discuss my work "Contrastive Lift" on 3D object segmentation using 2D pre-trained foundation models\, following which I will talk about addressing the same problem using language.\nSpeaker(s): Yash Bhalgat\nAgenda:\n– Invited talk from Yash Bhalgat the final year PhD student at University of Oxford's Visual Geometry Group (VGG) supervised by Andrew Zisserman\, Andrea Vedaldi\, Joao Henriques and Iro Laina.\n– Q/A Session\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/468355

SUMMARY:Title: Trend and Opportunities for High-Speed (GS/s) ADCs
DESCRIPTION:Title: Trend and Opportunies for High-Speed (GS/s) ADCs\nAbstract: Analog to digital converter (ADC) is a critical building block for most electronic systems. Many\nwideband electronic systems (such as wireless and wireline communications) favor digitization of analog\nsignal with increasing bandwidth (>GHz) and fidelity; at the same time\, demand a low area/power\nconsumption. It leads to a great interest in high-speed ADCs in recent years. In this talk\, I will describe\nthe recent trend of high-speed (>GS/s) ADC. Many existing works leverage massively interleaved SAR\nADCs. On the other hand\, there are emerging opportunities to quantize the analog signal in time domain\nwith high speed. I will introduce a few ADC architectures and/or techniques that demonstrate promises\nin achieving high conversion rate but at a low area and/or power consumption\, including some silicon\nexamples developed in my research group.\nSpeaker(s): Mike Chen\,\nAgenda:\nNetworking: 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm (PT)\nPresentation: 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm (PT)\nRoom: 116\, Bldg: Bergin Hall\, 500 El Camino Real\, Santa Clara University\, Santa Clara\, California\, United States\, 95053
