UCI GET PHIT Pre-Summit Training Day: An Amazon Web Services Workshop
This IEEE Global Emerging Technology “GET” PHIT Pre-Summit Training Day Workshop is being hosted in partnership with the UC Irvine Public Health Informatics & Technology (PHIT) Program as part of its UCI PHIT Workforce Development Series and UCI PHIT Industry Summit.
An Amazon Web Services Workshop
for
Public Health Informatics & Technology Students and Professionals
The UCI “GET” PHIT training workshop (Amazon Web Services Workshop) focuses on the use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) for Public Health professionals. It consists of four x 90-minute workshops on the use of AWS tools and frameworks, including AWS HealthLake, FHIR, and SageMaker Studio for Data Science and AI.
Welcome to this full-day training on Amazon Web Services (AWS) for Public Health Informatics & Technology (PHIT). This program is designed to give public health students, professionals and technologists a hands-on, practical introduction to the AWS tools and services most relevant to their work — from setting up a cloud workstation and exploring core AWS frameworks, to working with healthcare-specific data standards like FHIR and platforms like AWS HealthLake. Throughout the day, sessions will build on one another, moving from foundational setup to applied topics like geospatial visualization, data management, and agentic AI coding tools.
The day is organized into four 90-minute sessions, with breaks and lunch built in for networking and informal discussion. We'll close with a look at advanced and emerging topics, including AWS Bio Discovery and infectious disease modeling, giving participants a glimpse of where cloud-based public health research is headed. Whether you're new to AWS or looking to deepen your technical toolkit, this agenda is designed to leave you with practical skills you can apply directly to public health informatics work.
The workshop is led by (https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-butler-embeddedengineer/), a former AWS Partner Solutions Architect and Corporate Trainer, along with (https://www.linkedin.com/in/brianjosephhagerty/), a UCI Physics & Math graduate who began his career at Beckman Instruments in Beckman’s Scientific & Clinical Instruments Divisions.
